The key to a good diagnostician, is someone that listens, someone that engages with the patient and I think that's the most important thing. 1,000 Folder Cranes is an acupuncture clinic and I got the name from the Japanese tradition to offer someone a thousand folded cranes or origami cranes for long-lasting health and the idea resonated with me and the concept of not just treating the acute symptoms but of Chinese medicine, actually, this holistic thing where we're actually trying to create health and well-being.

And so, this name 1,000 Folded Cranes really has some resonation. It informs the way I practice. We call it root-and-branch in Chinese medicine. We obviously want to take care of what will affect you at that moment, the branch, but we believe that there's actually something deeper and that's the root. So a good practitioner will be that. They first treat the branch but it also working on the root to try and alleviate as much of the pain or the symptom with the actual condition that's causing it.
Specialty in Healing
I got specialization from school in sports medicine but I've also taken about four hundred hours of acupuncture work of Western Orthopedics classes at Cedar Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles on Western Orthopedics and that traditionally been my specialty. However, when I was in Shanghai for 2 years, I worked at a fertility clinic so that expanded my scope of my ability, so to speak, and I treated gynecological issues and fertility cases and postpartum issues, and I was really successful at that.
At-home Care
What really is kind of the old traditional in both Western and Chinese is the house calls-- the doctor going on the house call. And I think that's really important that we as practitioners have that still in our bag of tricks, and so what I'm offering, is I offer that service as well and it's wonderful because for the patient, there in their home, that safety net, you're at home and I'm coming to you.
Universal Access
What's really great is that acupuncture used to be this renegade medicine is now part of the system. I take insurance just like any other medical professional. We are now part of the medical community. So what I think is really important is that patients come in and see an acupuncturist before their problems get too big and that's the beauty of this kind of medicine, which may be sets us apart from allopathic or Western medicine where you do wait until these symptoms are very manifest. With an acupuncturist, you're able to go in weekly, or monthly. And what we're doing in that situation is that we are doing tune-ups and that way we can gauge the health of the person before it becomes an issue.

I invite you to experience this ancient and effective medicine.

Treating more than symptoms

By combining Chinese and Western medicine, it provides a unique approach to treatment. A good practitioner will treat the symptom or "branch", while also treating the underlying condition or "root."

  • 7500 Satisfied Patients
  • 860 Trusting Families
  • 416 Unique Cases

Dr. Fred Ragsdale now offers Trigger Point Therapy

By releasing trigger points, it promotes a natural healing response. As muscle fibers begin to relax, the pain associated with the tightness begins to fade, which promotes the release of histamines, relaxing blood vessels, and increasing blood flow into the area.

Trigger points are very common. See Services below.

Dr. Fred Ragsdale works to find the underlying root of your pain or problem.

"Your customized treatment will focus on healing and restoration. Little things can become larger problems and so I encourage you to come in for a consultation before resolving to pain medication. We can resolve many common conditions without you having to take pills or undergo surgery.

-Dr. Fred Ragsdale, DACM, L.Ac.

Dr. Fred Ragsdale - Autoimmune DisordersAcupuncture's healing and chemical-triggering functions works to stimulate natural processes including immune response. Recent studies indicate favorable effects of acupuncture on the immune functions as early as 72 hours after the first session and continue to provide health benefit one month beyond treatments. Impaired immune functions, such as chemotaxis, phagocytosis, lymphoproliferation and NK activity, were significantly improved by acupuncture. Acupuncture also brings normal values in the body closer to healthy levels, providing a regulatory effect on the immune system.

Acupuncture

At 1000 Folded Cranes, Dr. Ragsdale's expert acupuncture techniques, fortified with strong Eastern medical experience, allows his patients to find resolution to their condition or pain in less time. Dr. Ragsdale is a master diagnostician, and by treating the root and branch of the problem, patient have immediate indication as to the effectiveness of the treatment they receive.

Dr. Ragsdale's acupuncture combines classical Chinese medical principles with modern pathophysiology and western anatomy in a clinical way that facilitates healing and wellness to achieve the best treatment outcomes.

Also known as "dry needling" in the sports/physical therapy industry, Dr. Ragsdale relies on proven acupuncture and healing techniques that should only be performed by a licensed acupuncturist. As such, the body can benefit from one or more treatments designed to help promote balance in the body (Qi or Chi - pronounced: Chee) for common ailments and physical injury, as well as increased blood flow and healing.

Dr. Ragsdale is able to elicit the "De Qi", or arrival of Qi, through proper diagnosis, point / meridian selection and his refined, wellness focused techniques. Dr. Ragsdale has studied classical Chinese styles, Japanese acupuncture, trigger point therapy, and now, while practicing Master Tung acupuncture, has come into a practice and style all of his own.

Prolotherapy (Prolo-acupuncture)

What is Protherapy? According to the National Institute of Health, Prolotherapy treatment involves "a series of 2- 5 monthly injections of a topical anesthetic and a solution of other medicines directly on sore tendon or ligaments, or into painful joints" (Rabago, Slattengren, & Zgierska, 2010,p. 17).

Is Prolotherapy safe?

Yes.  Published studies for the National Institute of Health (NIH) indicate that prolotherapy is safe and prudent when delivered by an experienced practitioner. Findings reveal that the treatment does not appear to have significant risk beyond other injection techniques, such as steroid injections.

How does Prolo-acupuncture work?

Dr. Ragsdale offers prolo-acupuncture treatment, which can provide similar results without injections.  By directly treating these injured areas, we are stimulating the body to heal itself, restoring function to the joint or tendon naturally.  This treatment promotes rapid healing and the reduction of pain.

The effectiveness is wide-ranging and includes pain associated with:

  • The back
  • Neck
  • Joints throughout the body
  • Arthritis
  • Migraine headaches
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sciatica
  • Herniated discs
  • Temporo Mandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ).

Chronic musculoskeletal pain is often due to the weakness of ligaments and tendons. Joints, such as the knee and shoulder, often develop instability as well as weakening of the internal cartilage surfaces. These areas are often improved by prolotherapy and prolo-acupuncture.

How are pain and injury assessed?

I will perform a physical exam for common injuries and pain of the major joints of the body, including observation, inspection, palpation, and special orthopedic tests for joint range-of-motion, tracking, and stability. During the exam, we will assess levels of pain as well as the mechanics of injury, looking for red flags for serious or urgent joint conditions that could involve other medical professionals. If treatment is applicable to your condition, a prolo-acupuncture schedule will be created for you.

How is Prolo-acupuncture performed?

Prolo-acupuncture involves needling into the area where the ligaments have either been weakened or damaged through injury or strain. It is performed as similar to normal acupuncture.

When is this type of treatment advised?

  • Recurrent swelling or fullness involving a joint or muscular region
  • Popping, clicking, grinding, or catching sensations with movement
  • A sensation of your  legs giving way with associated back pain
  • Temporary benefit from chiropractic manipulation or manual mobilization that fails to ultimately resolve the pain
  • Distinct tender points along the bone at tendon or ligament attachments
  • Numbness, tingling, aching, or burning referred into an upper or lower extremity
  • Recurrent headache, face pain, jaw pain, ear pain
  • Chest pain with tenderness along the rib attachments on the spine or along the front of the chest
  • Spine pain that does not respond to surgery or whose origin is not clear from MRI, CT, X-Ray, Myelogram, or other similar studies

Prolo-acupuncture can:

  • Accelerate healing and reduce severity from acute sprains and strains
  • Re-stabilize hypermobile joints,  restoring normal joint tracking and biomechanics
  • Limit and reverse the effects of joint degeneration that leads to osteoarthrosis
  • Enhance the treatment of muscles, nerves, as well as other soft tissues, and systems that contribute to chronic pain.

After a musculoskeletal injury, there is often strain or a stretch of ligaments. Usually, healing occurs over time, restoring ligaments to their normal strength. However, if this healing does not occur, the result is lax ligaments. This can cause instability, muscle spasm, and a tendency to incur re-injury.

Pain that fails to respond to the traditional approaches is often caused by an injury to fibrous connective tissues, such as tendons and ligaments. Ligaments connect bone to bone, while tendons connect muscle to bone. Both ligaments and tendons may be damaged by major or minor trauma—smaller activities are repetitive. In most people, these injuries tend to heal over 1 to 2 months.

Sometimes the tissue damage is beyond repair. These tissues have a lower blood supply and are known to heal poorly compared to other tissues such as muscle, and therefore surgery may be needed. In other cases, patients with conditions such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome may have underlying metabolic deficiencies that impair the healing process. These patients will often demonstrate pain and tenderness at the connections of their ligaments and tendons. This discomfort presents with patterns of pain, such as numbness, tingling, and other abnormal sensations.

Ligaments and Joints that can benefit from Prolotherapy and Prolo-acupuncture:

Shoulder, Arms, and Hands
  • Acromio-clavicular joint
  • Gleno-humeral joint: AMBRI, TUBS and SLAP lesions
  • Elbow collateral ligaments
  • Wrist ulnar- and radio-carpal ligaments and the triangular fibrocartilage complex
Hip, Knee, Ankle and Foot
  • Knee patellar, collateral and cruciate ligaments
  • Knee menisci and the tibio-meniscal ligament
  • The superior and inferior tibio-fibular joints
  • Lateral ankle/foot: ATF, CF, PTF and CC ligaments
  • Medial ankle: hyper-pronation, deltoid and spring ligaments
The Spine
  • Cervical and lumbar facet joints
  • Posterior sacro-iliac, ilio-lumbar and sacro-tuberous ligaments
  • Whiplash and the supraspinous ligament

Cupping Therapy

As practiced by 1000 Folded Cranes, cupping therapy is a painless, and non-invasive procedure that improves circulation reduces pain and reduces toxins in the body. Most patients would call the experience an enjoyable, almost spa-like experience, and one of their favorite ways to end their acupuncture sessions. Small, ball-like glass cups are placed on the front or the back of the torso and allowed to remain for a period of time.

The air within the jars is removed, forcing a portion of the skin to be pulled in the jar like a gentle vacuum. We employ an additional technique of using oil-based massage liniments that allow the jars to slide across areas of tension and pain, treating a greater area. Cupping is remarkably effective for relaxing muscles and restoring proper circulation.

Cupping is an essential tool for most musculoskeletal conditions, pain, colds and flu symptoms and all detox/weight loss. It can help remove toxins from the body and stimulate the flow of fresh blood, lymph, and Qi to the affected area and throughout the body.

Cupping therapy is not solely a tradition of Chinese medicine, as it was also recommended by Hippocrates, the man whom many consider to be the "Father of Modern Medicine," in his guide to clinical treatment.

Trigger Point Therapy

What is a Trigger Point Therapy with Acupuncture? Trigger Point Therapy with Acupuncture aims to resolve trigger points within the muscle.  A trigger point is a small patch of tightly contracted muscle tissue within the larger muscle, which can reduce blood flow and range-of-motion.  This is widely known as a muscle knot, which can be painful as it becomes less likely to fully relax on its own.  Because our muscles are made up of thousands of tiny fibers, these knots can occur in multiple places.  As trigger points develop, the entire muscle becomes less able to expand and contract normally.

How does Trigger Point Therapy with Acupuncture work?

Releasing trigger points with the use of acupuncture promotes a natural healing response.  By accessing nerves within the muscle, contractions of the muscle trigger a reaction from the body. The process promotes the release of histamines, relaxing blood vessels, and increasing blood flow into the area, which allows the affected tissues to recover more effectively. As the muscle fibers begin to relax, the pain associated with the tightness begins to fade.

Overused muscles are continuously contracting, and as a result, become shorter, which can become a chronic condition over time. Therefore, getting the muscle to release is extremely beneficial by reducing the strain on tendons and joints, which also has a positive impact on repetitive injuries like tendonitis. Dr. Ragsdale has developed specialized treatment, which is helping patients resolve trigger points.

How do you find trigger points in the muscle?

According to the National Institute of Health and National Center for Biotechnology Information, the best detection method and "gold standard" is through physical examination (Shah, Thaker, Heimur, Aredo, Sikdar, & Gerber, 2015, p. 17).  The process requires palpation (feeling the area), identifying a stiff band of muscle fibers and nodule within the band combined with the ability to reproduce your pain with subtle yet sustained pressure. Once the trigger points have all been found, effective treatment can be proposed.

Are Trigger Points common?

Yes, and they may point to many severe and unexplained aches and pains.  Myofascial pain syndrome is very common, which can be identified by a sore spot.  As described as micro-cramps, these sore spots are interpreted as cramps and spasms, which can continue to occur around the same injury location as the pain worsens.  As a result, these trigger points may be a significant factor in the assessment of neck pain and back pain as a "cause, a complication, or a bit of both" Ingraham (2020).

Herbal Remedies

At 1000 Folded Cranes, we understand that not all patients can "appreciate" the smell or taste of Chinese herbs. Herbs have a raw, organic smell that some have compared to a bitter-spice scent or something derived from plant roots. Instead, we use liquid extracts and powdered granules for all of the formulas prescribed.

We only use herbal supply companies that have demonstrated consistent testing quality and have stringent protocols concerning the use of pesticides and heavy metal processing methods.

Our primary concern is avoiding potentially adverse interactions with western medications. With a thorough review of your medical history and medications, we will determine if particular herbal remedies can be safely prescribed.

Dr. Ragsdale has extensive training in herb-pharmaceutical interactions and makes use of reliable pharmacological resources to foresee and avoid adverse interactions. he is also conservative and judicious about the combined use of western pharmaceuticals and herbal therapies.

Veteran's Care

Chronic pain, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety are a few of the common conditions that affect our military men and women.  As heroes, we must recognize and support their care, particularly where we can supplement their VA treatment, boosting access to specialized services that can improve the quality of care.

In addition to trauma, Veterans may experience acute and chronic pain due to post-surgical conditions as well as injuries and strains sustained during their deployments.  Our goal is to reduce and resolve pain conditions through holistic methods, thereby allowing many Veterans to reduce their pain medication consumptions.

TriWest Healthcare Alliance

1000 Fold Cranes acupuncture accepts TriWest Healthcare Alliance, whose mission is to support our nation's Veterans and the military community. By supporting TriWest, Dr. Ragsdale supports the Veteran's Administration, working to improve the health outcomes of veterans and those actively serving our country.

"Veterans often ask how acupuncture will help them, unaware of how acupuncture trains the body to respond to targeting stimuli, prompting the body to facilitate its own natural healing process. "

- Dr. Fred Ragsdale

Veterans' Access to Care through Choice, Accountability, and Transparency Act of 2014

Referred to as the Veterans Choice Act, the Veterans' Access to Care through Choice, Accountability, and Transparency Act of 2014, provides funding for veterans so they can obtain expert treatment beyond the VA.  While there are no acupuncturists currently working at the VA, veterans who qualify for medical coverage automatically qualify for 100% coverage.

The benefits of acupuncture include:
  • Reduced inflammation caused by injuries and surgery
  • Acute and chronic pain management in all parts of the body
  • Reduced anxiety and irritability
  • Improved mental clarity, concentration, and memory
  • More restful sleep
  • Increased energy

Worker's Compensation

We understand that wellness is a concerted effort, where those who wish to restore their ability to thrive do so by seeking professional care, improving their productivity and mental state. As such, Dr. Fred Ragsdale works with insurance companies and representatives of injured workers to promote better outcomes and rapid return to work.

Dr. Ragsdale's cost-conscious process ensures that resources are not squandered while maximizing the effects of acupuncture using his unique skills and background, effectively reducing acute and chronic pain, soft tissue soreness, stress, anxiety, and sleeplessness.

California Labor Code Section 4600

The California Labor Code Section 4600 specifically allows for acupuncture treatment, stating "medical, surgical, chiropractic, acupuncture, and hospital treatment", among other services, that are "required to cure or relieve the injured worker from the effects of his or her injury shall be provided by the employer…" (Legislature.ca.gov., 2014).

How Does California Workers' Compensation view Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is used as an alternative method of care when pain medication is no longer desired. It is also used as a supplemental treatment to physical rehabilitation.  Acupuncture also provides improved healing and recovery in post-surgical conditions. Information is available to workers regarding using their acupuncturist as their primary care physician (visit CA.gov regarding SB863).  Workers can elect to change their treating physician to their personal acupuncturist following a work-related injury or illness (See Notice of pre-designation of personal physician (Form DWC 9783), at www.dir.ca.gov).

"When I got hurt, I reviewed my options to care and wanted to find a way to reduce my pain meds and sleeping pills.  After just a few days of treatment, I could already see why Dr. Ragsdale was the right choice for me.  Now I go to see him on Fridays after work, which helps me to be 100% ready for a productive and energized week.

"I first went to see Dr Ragsdale after trying to conceive unsuccessfully for 2 and a half years, both naturally and with IUI treatments. I was about to embark on IVF and was looking for support through acupuncture. Seeing Dr Ragsdale weekly before and throughout treatment really helped me to cope with the physical and emotional rigors of the IVF process. I suffered very few side-effects from the IVF medication and was surprised by how well I was able to cope with the emotional stress. Our first cycle went very smoothly and was successful and I am now very happily and healthily into the 2nd trimester of my pregnancy. Thanks so much, Dr Ragsdale!"

-Jenny

"If you are searching for a professional and personal acupuncturist that truly cares I highly recommend Dr. Ragsdale. I injured my back one morning and he was able to get me in that night for an appointment. The cupping treatment combined with the acupuncture gave me great relief. If you are in need of pain relief I highly suggest Dr. R. Until this treatment I was not a believer in acupuncture. I would suggest to anyone experiencing pain or other health conditions to give it a try and see the benefits for yourself."

-Jake

"I am a rugby player and I came to see Fred to treat a pain on my longitudinal arch of foot that lasted for months and was very crippling on the pitch but also in my daily life. Fred's diagnosis was quick and relevant: it turned out to be a very bad inflammation. I had three acupuncture sessions, which was something very new for me. And it worked more than expected. The pain totally disappeared. More than the treatment itself, I really appreciated the fact that Fred took time to explain me in very simple words what was the problem and how to solve it. His advices on what to do at home to deal with the pain were also very helpful. Good job !"

"I first visited Fred because I was looking for a solution for a chronic sinus infection and allergies.  I had never tried acupuncture before but was deeply interested in Traditional Chinese Medicine as an expat in China and because Western medicine wasn't always effective.  Acupuncture at 1000 Folded Cranes not only provided a cure but Dr. Ragsdale made TCM approachable and understandable for me as a patient by explaining his approach and why – something another doctor would likely not be able to do.  Thanks, Fred!"

-Christina

"When I first started my acupuncture treatment, I was very skeptical – but having struggled with Arthritis for many years, having taken lots of medication and still not being able to feel better, I was willing to try anything. So I went. After a few weeks I already started to see improvement in my pains caused by RA. My headaches disappeared, my PMS related pains also disappeared. Actually, I have never before been as pain-free as I was during my treatment at 1000 Folded Cranes – even my western RA medication couldn't do what the treatment did for me. I haven't felt so good for a long time and I've realized, that when I get back to my country, I need to continue my acupuncture treatment."

‘Fred took great care to understand my injury, explain exactly what he thought was happening and then went through in detail what he was looking to achieve through the acupuncture……and it didn't hurt! I would highly recommend him'.

-Angus

"I recently had the privilege of working with Dr. Fred Ragsdale on a "laundry list" of health concerns I had from serving 18 months in a combat zone. I was immediately impressed by his willingness to thoroughly listen to everything I had to say without interjecting or prematurely diagnosing me. He asked me so many detailed and specific questions that I knew he was genuinely invested in understanding the root of my symptoms. My favorite part about working with Dr. Fred was that he empowered me to move forward independently by giving me plenty of education and resources to continue my healing.Through his knowledge, suggestions, and direct treatment, I am now much more clairvoyant and balanced as well as overall happier and calmer. Thanks so much to Dr. Fred for his expertise!"

-Andy

"Dr Fred helped me with some chronic more longer term health issues. He set me up with a treatment plan that was realistic, do-able and professional.  He takes accountability for what he prescribes as a doctor and his passion and commitment to quality care comes through in his practice. I would recommend him without hesitation."

-Karen

"Had "doc" Fred over with a bunch of needles to sort out my neck issue. Got a thorough evaluation, he explains in a way that normal guys like me can understand, answered all my questions and did an outstanding but not too painful job.

The "doc" comes to your home, always on time and very accurate with the needles … By far the best I have ever experienced."

-Sandor

"I had tweaked the bones in my upper back/lower neck region and as it ended up had a bit of a stenosis problem going in my C4,C5 region. One of the biggest problems was the inflammation I had, disc bulge touching on the nerves causing some numbness in my fingers and tingling in my arm. An acupuncture session with Dr. Fred put a real dent in the inflammation problem. I highly recommend his service."

"Early this year I came to Fred with a hip problem. Walking was ok but stairs caused me big problems as the pain in my hip was very intense when I climbed stairs. I live in a 4 story building and could not walk up the stairs without hanging on to the railing and helping to pull myself up with my hands. Before I had finished my series of treatments  I could walk up the stairs without helping with my hands or best of all without any pain. A tuneup or two after a few months and I have not required Fred's expert and professional services for a long time now. He does great work and I would not hesitate in recommending him to anyone."

"During my stay on Phuket during 7 months, I had the pleasure to meet up with Fred. I have experienced acupuncture for more than 13 years mainly in London and Fred impressed me as he gave me acupuncture free of pain. Not only I could not feel the needles but I immediately felt the well-being effect of the treatment. Fred is very friendly and more than professional. He takes the time to listen to all what the patient has to say. He takes all factors into account like the life style, the congenital issues and the life changes of the patient. I highly recommend you to meet up with Fred and try out his acupuncture treatment and his herbals concoction."

"I started seeing Dr. Fred Ragsdale for a variety of health conditions including infertility, eczema and general fatigue. I must admit, I was a skeptic at the beginning because I knew little about TCM, but figured it was worth a try before I pursued "aggressive" Western medicine infertility treatments. A few months after receiving weekly treatments from Dr. Fred, I was pregnant, my eczema was almost gone and he helped to diagnose (and treat) my fatigue which was caused by a condition many Western medicine doctors in the USA and China had missed.

Fast forward almost a year later to today and I am now 33 weeks pregnant and have had the best pregnancy — no morning sickness or edema and tons of energy. It's exactly opposite of my previous pregnancy which was quite difficult.

I highly recommend Dr. Fred as he is extremely knowledgeable and treats you holistically rather treating just your individual symptoms. I feel the best I have felt in years. Thank you Dr. Fred Ragsdale."

"Fred gave his time to our rugby team during a major competition. His services were greatly appreciated and in my opinion assisted with us winning the final of the Shanghai 7s. I am not a needle fanatic, however I had a good experience going to see Fred."

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do acupuncture needles hurt?

Most people barely feel a thing when needles are inserted. Some people feel a slight pinch, and others ask "Is it in yet?" The reason acupuncture needles don't give the painful sensation you might expect is because they're very, very thin in comparison to the hypodermic needles used to give injections.

There are certain sensations associated with the therapeutic effects of acupuncture, which are known as De Qi (pronounced "day-chee"). These may include slight cramping, heaviness, distention, tingling or electric sensation traveling along a meridian. You will notice that this sensation brings a smile to your acupuncturist as it is an indication the healing has begun. If any discomfort is experienced, it is usually mild.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is very safe. The average liability coverage for an acupuncturist is about $600 per year, while primary care physicians pay an average of $12,000 per year. That's a 20:1 difference. While this may not translate into exactly a 20 to 1 difference in safety, a visit to an acupuncturist is at least as safe as a visit to your doctor, if not safer.

Acupuncture needles are extremely safe, because they are pre-sterilized, individually packaged, and disposable. Every practitioner gets extensive training in anatomy so as to avoid accidentally inserting a needle in a place that can cause damage.

Do I have to believe in it for it to work? Does acupuncture always work?

Acupuncture and herbs work whether you believe in them or not. Good results are seen in the majority of cases. When all other treatment methods have failed, this indicates a systematic imbalance – exactly what acupuncture excels at treating.

What should I expect on my first visit?

During your first office visit, we spend a lot of time getting a complete picture of your health and lifestyle. We examine the condition of your tongue (is it cracked, coated, excessively pink? etc.), and check your pulse on both wrists (the quality of your pulse gives information about possible imbalances). We'll also ask questions about your emotional state, and specific symptoms you may have.

This is done because unlike Western medicine, we treat the whole person and the root of your condition instead of only focusing on the symptoms. The first visit can last from an hour to an hour and a half, including an extensive consultation acupuncture treatment lasting another 30-45 minutes.

Your subsequent visits will be much faster – usually an hour long. We'll make a short review of your progress followed by an acupuncture treatment.

How often would I need to come in for treatment?

Typically acupuncture treatments are given once a week. If the condition is acute and painful, treatments may be given 2-3 times per week until the condition starts to come under control. The exact duration of treatment depends on the condition, your basic level of health, and how well you respond to acupuncture.

How does acupuncture work?

In Chinese medical theory, acupuncture works by balancing the body's Qi. Qi can be described as a form of bio-energy that runs along 12 major meridians. If Qi gets blocked, it shows up as an imbalance or illness. Basically, if you have a health condition, some part of your body's system is out of whack. Chinese medical theory allows us to diagnose the imbalance… and balance it.

In Western medical theory, acupuncture appears to work by stimulating parts of the brain. It also stimulates the body to release natural biomolecules such as neurotransmitters, vasodilators, and hormones. The exact mechanisms which brings this about are unknown, but the effects are measurable.

A good example of this is the use of acupuncture to induce labor. One of the first things that Oriental medical students learn is that there are a few points that are absolutely forbidden to use with pregnant women. These points cause the release of oxytocin, which is the hormone that naturally induces labor. Studies have shown that using acupuncture to induce labor reduces the active (painful) phase of labor by an average of 3.6 hours.
